What happens at my first orthodontic appointment?

Your teeth, jaw and profile will be evaluated. Special x-rays (panoramic & cephalometric) showing your head, face and jaw are taken to help the doctor take special measurement and effectively plan your treatment. Impressions are also taken to record the way your teeth and jaw fit together. Regular photographs of your face, teeth, and profile might be taken to compare the differences prior to, during, and/or after treatment.

Braces

Orthodontics is the treatment of irregular teeth and improvement of facial appearance.

At what age should orthodontic treatment start?

It could start as early as 8 years old and in some cases of severe malocclusion.

How are teeth moved?

Using one or more appliances, braces work by gently applying pressure to your teeth. This causes bone to be absorbed on one side, and new bone then grow in slowly on the other side of your teeth, holding teeth in position.

Is there a maximum age for orthodontics?

In general, tooth positioning can be improved at practically any age. While most orthodontics treatments are associated with children, age is not a limited factor since the tissues involved in the movement of teeth are the same in both children and adults.
